Cossacks!!?!??!

Aren’t they a notch below fraternities on the PC Scale?

Yes, but they did maintain the glow of democracy through the Dark Ages – and their democratic Constitution is the oldest in Europe.

The original painting that we lovingly ripped off is by Rapin and is called “Cossacks Writing a Letter to the Turks”. This letter is in reponse to the ultimatum by the Sultan that the cossacks surrender.

They are enjoying a good laugh in responding since they had snuck in to the Sultan’s palace the previous night and cut his head off.

Repin’s painting was done when “Russian” culture was throwing off the shackles of European (really, French) culture, embraced slavishly by Peter the Great and hence alll of his court. This lasted throughout the 18th century until about the 1830’s when the “kultura” started to realize the stark beauty of peasant, folk culture and began to create music and literature incorporating peasant themes. Of course, some of the names involved in this “Russian” rennaisance were Ukrainian. i.e. Hohol, Repin. Hohol or Gogol w rote of Ukrainian village life in Russian because the Ukrainian language was made illegal.
